Centennial Reunion for Social Studies and History Majors

FY24 Centennial Reunion for Social Studies and History Majors

Join us for a momentous reunion of history and social studies majors! The History Alumni Steering Committee is hosting a wine and cheese social mixer at Summit City Winery at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 20. This special gathering will not only allow you to reconnect with old friends and colleagues but also celebrate the progress made in supporting the Dr. Lee Bruce Kress Endowed Scholarship in History Fund, which we hope will become the first fund dedicated to supporting a graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in history.

Don Borden '79 will be making a special announcement related to the scholarship, while faculty members Dr. William Carrigan and Dr. Janet Lindman will provide brief remarks. Sponsored by the Department of History and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, this event promises an evening of intellectual camaraderie, heartfelt connections, and exciting updates.

Registration for this event is $25. Registration will close on Friday, October 13, but please register as soon as possible because spots are limited due to the size of the venue. Registrants may register one additional guest while spots are available.

About

The Lee Bruce Kress Scholarship will be the first-ever fund dedicated to covering the tuition of a graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in history. Many of our alumni have reported their desire to pursue a graduate degree as part of their professional development. Many history alums, however, work for school districts or public history organizations that are unable to cover the full costs of a Master’s degree. The Department hopes that this scholarship will make it far more affordable for those who wish to earn a Master’s in history at Rowan.

Lee Kress began teaching at Glassboro State College in the Fall of 1973. He taught there for the next four decades, witnessing the transformation of the campus and multiple name changes. Over his many years, he taught classes in both Latin American and United States history, as well as Historical Methods and the senior capstone course, Seminar in History. In addition to helping to hire and mentor many of the current faculty, he was a long-time advisor for the history honors society, Phi Alpha Theta. The Department of History is pleased to announce that 100% of the current faculty have given to the Lee Bruce Kress Scholarship. In doing so, they proudly honor Lee and also support the worthy cause of making graduate education in history more affordable.
